What you will do in your working day

A busy machine shop based in Soham, Cambridgeshire require an enthusiastic apprentice interested in engineering and passionate in following an Engineering education pathway. Will be provided by the Machine Shop Manager and other qualified CNC Machine Operator/Setter/Programmer. This is an Advanced Apprenticeship, working in a machine shop, where the Company will train you to be a competent Machinist Operator and gain wider engineering craft skills over a 3 to 4-year period. It will involve attending college weekly during term time and with regular assessments conducted by the College.

Duties will include:

With close mentoring support, the apprentice will be required to operate standard lathes, milling machines, Saws and all general machine shop tools (Full training will be given), There will be an opportunity to weld, work with different materials, use AutoCAD and progress to Solid Works.
Must be capable of working in a team environment and meeting strict delivery dates. They will be expected to be punctual and have high standards in all they do.

To learn how to run production jobs and to carry out all inspection duties required to ensure that parts are manufactured correctly to the drawing and meet tight deadlines.
To make sure that any machine issues are reported to Machine Shop Manager
To be responsible for keeping the areas you are working in and around, clean and tidy.
To ensure that all Health and Safety procedures are adhered to and to work in a safe and competent manner.
To learn about Lean manufacturing and continuous improvement techniques
To carry out any other duties that may be assigned by the Machine Shop Manager

Level 3 Machining Technician Apprenticeship Standard
Functional Skills in English & maths (Exemptions apply)

During the first year of the apprenticeship, you will spend 3-days in-college during term-time and 2 days spent in the Workplace. Into years 2 to 3 years, you will attend college 1 day per week and 4 days spent in the Workplace.
Towards the end of the practical training period of apprenticeship the training will be all in the Workplace, preparing for the End Point Assessment. The apprentice would be assigned assessor through the college, who would typically come out to visit in the workplace to assess workplace competence. The knowledge side would be provided via day release workshop attendance, assignments, evidence of workplace competence. Portfolio would be checked via an online Smart Assessor.

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

Opportunities to progress to a senior CNC machinist and other roles within the business, plus to continue learning onto higher course levels.

Things to consider

Must have a genuine interest in all aspects of learning engineering craft skills and therefore willing to commit to this apprenticeship training that would start in Autumn 2024.
